I have been creating with fabric since a very young age and graduated from University with an Art & Design Degree. Since 2001 the passion for creating artistically created OOAK bears and dolls came about partly thanks to my husband who had a collection of Artist Teddy Bears when we met, I have been designing and making OOAK bears and friends ever since.
The current collection is the first of many creations yet to be crafted and each individual soft sculpture is lovingly hand made with the greatest attention to detail, in the best quality materials. I uphold a long history in bear making, by crafting my bears & friends in the traditional manner as well as formulating new techniques. Each new design undertaken is a new experience which pushes me further, developing my creative ideas which drives me to continually create.
I am currently residing in the Champagne area of France along with my husband. As well as making Teddy bears & soft sculptures I paint fine art pictures in oil and acrylic paints, in my art studio, “Coin Perdu”.
In June 2014 I was awarded by the Academic Society, Arts, Science, Lettres, Paris, a Medal for my talent as a painter/designer & for my contribution to modern fine art.
Owl hand painted onto silk, by Nicole Woodward, for Arianrhod’s cloak.
Arianrhod, a Celtic Goddess transforms into an Owl using her velvet cloak with this painting of an owl inside, which hides her body shaped and envelops her.
“Occasionally people come along that are not content with simply moving things along. They want to take things further, tear up the plans and start again. Then take another brave step, they will see the future and knock down the walls to reach it. Insist that the dream is possible. Overcome all indecision and take a running jump into the uncharted. Board by reinvention of the superficial kind, they want more, because there goal is not to improve in what has been done before but to totally reimagine it.”
Inspiration comes to me from many sources … my interest in art, literature, history, different religions, persons of interest, places I have travelled, my experiences and memories, an antique shop, a car boot sale or a colour and from the fabrics and materials I source and use.
My creativity blends and mixes all my inspirations and influences with my ideas like an alchemist melting pot, or an artist paint pallet.
I never know exactly how an idea will turn out, it’s a journey and the goal will move and change along the creative high way. It can make it difficult sometimes to start an new project but it keeps things challenging, fresh, new and exiting.
``A moment of complete happiness never occurs in the creation of a work of art. The promises of it is felt in the act of creation but disappears towards the completion.``
Lucian Freud the Artist
I think that this is true as an artist as you can always think of a better way, a different way of doing things and this also keeps me creating and thinking constantly of new approaches and ideas. I have so many ideas that I do not think I have enough life to make them all!”
Some of my recent work:
Dear Nicole After meeting you at Hugglets I was drawn to your magical creations, how different and I have not seen anything similar in all my years of collecting, true one of a kind soft sculptures. The detail is exceptional, with so much thought going into your work. You shared the journey you take in producing each creation with over a month of work, a labour of love. Your own story and your journey from your Welsh background, to now living in France bringing the Welsh tales and fantasy into your work. This really shows in the Bears, your passion for difference. I feel honoured to have some of your greatest work in my collection, which I will treasure. The Welsh goddesses are already winning awards for their excellence. Their stories are fascinating, mystical and you have captured their fable and fairy tale existence. I am looking forward to seeing more in the Welsh tales collection. You are living the dream and making your creations, keep creating. I hope others can also really enjoy your work, as I am. You are a pleasure to deal with, being honest and fair. The Celtic Goddess arrived perfect and excellently packaged. All the care you took to ensure not only were the well packaged but that they had the best possible postage service that ensured that they were tracked, insured and signed for, I could not ask for anymore. Thank you also for sharing your work and your stories with me. I wish you every success in creating more amazing bears.
I made a custom order from Nicole and can recommend her if you are searching for one of a kind type. Her customer treatment is also one of a kind and which will give you an experience you will struggle finding somewhere else. She meet all my demands and created a bear beyond my imagination. I am so sure that you will be be very satisfied with the result. Thank you so much!
I was fortunate to meet today and later while having dinner the lovely Nicole Woodward. I had to have a second look at these large sculptures to begin to absorb and understand how good they were so glad I did and it was fascinating hearing the stories behind them. Ones for the wish list.
I would like to thank you for my stunning Bono bear[I was the lady who with her husband were counting our pennies to be able to buy him]. You kindly let me adopt him for the amount that we got together. I am so grateful to you as I truly love him, and have not stopped looking at him since we arrived home. The detail is unlike anything that I have ever seen before, you are remarkably talented. Not only that you are a lovely person and I truly thank you for making my Hugglets day. I am looking forward to seeing what else comes my way from you, I know that if I am lucky enough to get to Hugglets again yours will be the first stand that I aim for. Thank you thank you thank you. I really do appreciate what you did for me yesterday......xx
Admiral Nelson & Titan (English Version)
Nelson Nelson is simply a masterpiece. Sumptuously dressed in a suit of the Royal Navy bristling with decorations he proudly wears his long view of sea. Every detail is accurate and meticulously rendered: the suit, the hat, the missing arm, to the sparse hair, memories of an old injury. It exudes dignity, boldness, and it has the quiet look of the winner. A beautiful blue eyes that captures the attention. The work is accompanied by a very touching little book about the life of Admiral and the genesis of its creation. Succeed in giving such nobility to a bear, it is all the talent of Nicole Woodward. It has humor and respect in this representation Nelson. As in all her creations she managed to breathe life into his character, while striving to perfection details. Great art. Titan With his ears to the wind and Titan smart look is a funny and lively companion. I always feel that will follow me frolicking. He is absolutely adorable.
